COLREG Rule 13 – Overtaking

Safe overtaking requires clear judgment, patience, and decisive action. COLREG Rule 13 states that any vessel overtaking another must keep out of the way of the vessel being overtaken, regardless of the type of vessel involved.

A vessel is considered to be overtaking when approaching another vessel from more than 22.5 abaft her beam.

The overtaking vessel must keep well clear and take early, substantial action to pass safely.

The vessel being overtaken should maintain her course and speed unless action becomes necessary to avoid immediate danger.

Continue to treat the situation as an overtaking situation until the vessels are finally past and clear.

Never cross close ahead of the vessel being overtaken or create a close-quarters situation.

Maintain a proper lookout and use radar, AIS, VHF, and visual observations throughout the manoeuvre.

️ Golden Rule: The responsibility to avoid collision remains with the overtaking vessel. Early planning, clear intentions, and safe passing distances are the keys to a successful overtaking manoeuvre.
