COLREG Rule 14 – Head-On Situation

When two power-driven vessels are meeting on reciprocal or nearly reciprocal courses and a risk of collision exists, COLREG Rule 14 requires both vessels to take early and positive action by altering course to starboard, so they pass port to port safely.

Applies only to power-driven vessels in a head-on situation.

Both vessels must alter course to starboard in ample time.

Pass each other port to port with a safe passing distance.

Take early and substantial action to make your intentions clear.

Continuously monitor the situation using visual lookout, radar, AIS, and other available means.

If there is any doubt whether a head-on situation exists, assume that it does and act accordingly.
