COLREG Rule 15 – Crossing Situation
When two power-driven vessels are crossing and there is a risk of collision, the vessel that has the other vessel on her starboard (right) side must keep out of the way. The stand-on vessel should maintain her course and speed, but remain alert and take action if the give-way vessel fails to respond.
Key Takeaways:
If the other vessel is on your starboard side → Give Way
Alter course early and substantially, preferably to starboard
Avoid crossing ahead of the other vessel
The Stand-On Vessel maintains course and speed while monitoring the situation
Maintain a proper lookout and use all available means to assess collision risk
Understanding Rule 15 is essential for safe navigation and preventing collisions at sea.
