COLREG Rule 16 – Action by the Give-Way Vessel

When two vessels are in a situation where one is required to give way, Rule 16 sets out the key responsibility: the give-way vessel must take early and substantial action to keep well clear of the other vessel.

Give-way vessel: Take early and substantial action
Action: Alter course and/or speed as appropriate
Avoid: Late, small or uncertain manoeuvres
Keep clear: Make the action obvious and effective
Objective: Pass at a safe distance and avoid collision

Remember: The give-way vessel carries the primary responsibility for taking appropriate avoiding action. Good lookout, sound judgement and early manoeuvring are essential for safe navigation.

️ Important: Rule 16 applies to the give-way vessel. The stand-on vessel's responsibilities are addressed separately under Rule 17.
