COLREG RULE 20 — POWER-DRIVEN VESSELS & COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Rule 20 emphasizes the importance of early, substantial and decisive action when a risk of collision exists. Good seamanship means continuously assessing the situation and keeping well clear of other vessels.
Head-on situations — Take appropriate action to keep well clear.
Crossing situations — Follow the applicable give-way/stand-on responsibilities and avoid close-quarters situations.
Overtaking — Take appropriate action as the overtaking vessel to remain well clear.
Risk of collision — Assess continuously and use all available means.
Correct action — Make alterations early and substantial enough to be readily apparent.
️ Maintain a proper lookout, assess collision risk continuously, and never wait until the situation becomes critical.
️ Good judgement + early action + proper seamanship = safer navigation.
