COLREG Rule 21 – Overtaking: Know Your Responsibilities at Sea!

Overtaking another vessel is a situation where good seamanship, proper lookout, and clear communication are essential. Under COLREG Rule 13, the overtaking vessel must keep out of the way of the vessel being overtaken.

Overtaking vessel: Must keep well clear
Vessel being overtaken: Maintain her course and speed
Plan early: Assess the situation and collision risk
Use sound signals: Communicate your intended manoeuvre
Maintain safe distance: Avoid close-quarters situations
Complete the overtaking: Remain clear until safely past and clear

Key Reminder:
An overtaking vessel remains responsible for keeping clear. Never assume the other vessel will alter course for you.
