COLREG Rule 9 – Narrow Channels

COLREG Rule 9 – Narrow Channels

Navigating through narrow channels and fairways demands precision, discipline, and constant vigilance. COLREG Rule 9 requires vessels to keep as near as safely practicable to the starboard side of the channel, ensuring the safe and efficient flow of traffic.

Keep as close as practicable to the starboard side of the channel or fairway.

Pass port-to-port when meeting vessels in opposite directions.

Never cross a narrow channel if doing so would impede the safe passage of another vessel.

Proceed at a safe speed and maintain a proper lookout at all times.

Follow VTS instructions and comply with local navigation regulations where applicable.

Extra caution is essential for vessels constrained by their draught and in busy traffic areas.

️ Golden Rule: In narrow channels, good seamanship, clear communication, and strict compliance with COLREG Rule 9 help prevent collisions and keep everyone safe.
