Communication at Sea: Correction vs Personal Attack

  • THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CORRECTION AND A PERSONAL ATTACK

One of the most valuable lessons a seafarer can learn is that not every correction is criticism, and not every criticism is hate.

At sea, your Chief Officer may point out a mistake in your cargo calculations. Your Captain may correct your bridge watchkeeping. An engineer may remind you of a procedure you overlooked.

It may feel uncomfortable in the moment, but those corrections are often meant to protect you, your crew, the vessel, and the environment.

The maritime industry is built on continuous learning. Every near miss, every audit, every PSC inspection, every drill, and every debrief is an opportunity to improve.

A professional accepts constructive feedback because safety depends on it.

However, there is also a difference between someone who corrects you to help you grow and someone who only criticizes to discourage or belittle you.

The key is to focus on the value of the message rather than the emotion behind it.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this helping me become a safer and better seafarer?

If the answer is yes, accept it with humility.

The best officers and captains are not those who never make mistakes—they are the ones who are willing to learn from them.

Every correction accepted today can prevent an accident tomorrow.

  • Remember:

A professional never fears correction. A professional fears repeating the same mistake.

“The sea rewards those who keep learning—not those who believe they already know everything.”

“Don’t mistake every correction for hate.

The right people correct you because they want you to come home safely.” ⚓
