LESSON 122 – MEAN LATITUDE vs MERIDIONAL PARTS

Don’t Mix Them Up!

Mean Latitude (MLat) and Meridional Parts (MP) are two completely different concepts.

One of the most common mistakes in navigation exams is using the wrong one in calculations.

MEAN LATITUDE (MLat)

Mean Latitude is simply the average of the two latitudes.

Formula:

MLat = (Lat₁ + Lat₂) ÷ 2

Used in:

Plane Sailing

Middle-Latitude Sailing

Purpose:

To convert Difference of Longitude (DLo) into Departure.

Formula:

Departure = DLo × cos MLat

MERIDIONAL PARTS (MP)

Meridional Parts are values derived from the Mercator Projection that compensate for the distortion of latitude.

Used in:

Mercator Sailing

Purpose:

To calculate the course of a Rhumb Line.

Formula:

tan Course = DLo ÷ DMP

Where:

DMP = MP₂ − MP₁
