MSC 111: KEY IMO AMENDMENTS to MARITIME SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

At MSC 111 (13–22 May 2026), the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) formally adopted a series of mandatory amendments to international maritime safety instruments. These amendments, previously approved in principle at MSC 109, have now completed the adoption process and are scheduled to enter into force on 1 January 2028.

Key amendments include:

1. VDES recognized as an alternative to AIS

2. Standardized use of Remote Inspection Techniques (RIT)

3. Revised assumed mass for Industrial Personnel (IP)

4. New load testing requirements for launching appliance release systems

5. Enhanced safety requirements for guardrails on exposed decks

6. Updated maintenance and inspection requirements for life-saving appliances (LSA)

Effective date: 1 January 2028

Shipowners, ship managers, shipbuilders, and marine equipment suppliers are encouraged to assess the impact of these amendments, plan any necessary equipment upgrades, update onboard procedures, and ensure compliance with the new IMO requirements before they enter into force.
