🟥SUBJECT: GARBAGE MANAGEMENT

MARPOL Annex V aims to protect the marine environment by regulating how garbage is managed onboard ships. It identifies different types of waste, such as plastics, food waste, and operational waste, and sets clear rules on what may or may not be discharged into the sea. These rules are even stricter in designated Special Areas.

Most garbage must never be thrown overboard. However, some waste, such as food waste, may only be discharged under specific conditions allowed by MARPOL.

Ships are required to maintain a Garbage Record Book, display garbage disposal placards, implement a Garbage Management Plan, and ensure that all crew members are trained in proper garbage handling procedures.

Ports are also encouraged to provide adequate reception facilities so ships can dispose of their garbage safely without polluting the sea.
